About Reparations

After the end of apartheid in South Africa, the crucial factor to a peaceful transition to majority rule was the formal process of reconciliation that the entire nation went through together. It occurs to me that the U.S. needs to take a week off, and dedicate it as a country to retelling, deeply considering, mourning, and reaching for a common understanding of both African slavery in the U.S., and our treatment of the original native Americans. I'm not saying that we would roll back or cure the damage done to millions back then, but I do think we could all reach a deeper and more repentant understanding that would help move us forward as one people today.
