Iranian Monkeynaut

The U.S. State department says Iran's claim to have launched a monkey into space today cannot be confirmed. Iranian media are full of the pictures of this terrified monkey, but who's to say if he actually took the ride?

"I saw the monkey -- the pictures of the poor little monkey preparing to go to space," said Victoria Nuland, a spokeswoman for the State Department, when asked about "extraterrestrial primates." "We don't have any way to confirm this one way or the other with regard to the primate."

If he did take that ride, it is a significant violation of U.N. Security Council Resolution No. 1929, adopted two years ago, that prohibits Iran from further development of ballastic missiles capable of delivering nuclear warheads. That specifically would bar any testing or launch, like the one claimed today.
