Has Mokhtar Belmokhtar Over-Reached?

With one action, Belmokhtar’s newly established al-Qaeda cell, Witnesses in Blood, has broken just about every rule of the hit and-run jihadi. The Algerian crisis has turned Mokhtar Belmokhtar from a minor warlord into the West’s number one target, says Richard Spencer of The Telegraph.

Up until now, Western intelligence agencies were aware of, but not particularly concerned with Mokhtar's band of kidnappers and cigarette bootleggers, other than as a financier of groups with more reach, as in al-Qaeda. Have they over reached, with the disastrous strike against the Algerian oil facility?
